The
International Weeks of Resistance to Tobacco Transnationals 2001 (IWR
2001) kicked off April 9th, 2001 with successful events from Honduras to the Czech
Republic, and from India to Zambia! This event builds on IWR 2000, which involved participants from over 40
countries worldwide. See the news!
The Network for Accountability of Tobacco Transnationals (NATT) organized the IWR to support an
international treaty, the Framework Convention
on Tobacco Control (FCTC) that will stop the tobacco transnationals' manipulation and
interference in public health policy. Through IWR 2001 we are drawing attention to the
most insidious tobacco advertising images including the Marlboro Man (arguably the world's
leading source of tobacco addiction). IWR 2001 will continue through the
International Negotiating Body meeting on the FCTC, at the end of April. IWR 2001 is also
supported by the members of INGCAT,
the FCA, and other NGOs around the
world. Infact and the Global Partnership Program of Essential
Action, both NATT members, have played a critical role in organizing these events.
Participants are organizing signature campaigns, demonstrations at Philip Morris or B.A.T
facilities, holding press conferences, and running educational events, including getting "Making a Killing: Philip Morris, Kraft, and
Global Tobacco Addiction" on television. To get more involved, please contact
Infact, the coordinator for IWR 2001 activities.
