After four years of
hard work on the Framework Convention on Tobacco
Control (FCTC), the
World Health Assembly adopted the first global public
health treaty on May 21, 2003!. We kicked off the 4th International Week
of Resistance to Tobacco Transnationals 2002 (IWR
2002) during the week of 30 September - 4 October 2002--just two weeks
before the fifth full round of negotiations on the treaty--with events taking place across
the globe, from Brazil to India, and the US to Zambia! Click Here
for updates and stories from these exciting events! This is the fourth IWR event,
building on IWR 2000, IWR 2001,
and the March actions of IWR
2002 that involved thousands of participants
in over 40 countries! IWR 2002 is organized by the Network for Accountability of Tobacco Transnationals (NATT) in support of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The FCTC is an international treaty that has the potential prevent the spread of tobacco addiction among the children of the world and protect public health policy from interference by the tobacco transnationals. Through IWR 2002, NGOs released a hard-hitting report compiled by Infact and NATT that exposes tobacco industry attempts to influence public health policy from Australia to Zambia. The report was released to the media in every region of the world and was delivered to country FCTC delegates, exposing and challenging the heavy-handed influence of tobacco transnationals at this critical time in the FCTC process. This week of resistance led up to the 5th round of negotiations on the FCTC, which took place in Geneva 14-25 October 2002. Click Here for more information on the latest round of negotiations!
