A STORY OF THE FIRST GLOBAL HEALTH |
Overcoming the Odds is the
dramatic story of how countries of the Global South, non-governmental organizations, and
activists came together to challenge one of the most powerful industries in the
worldthe tobacco industryand won! Filmakers Kelly Anderson and Tami Gold
traveled with Infact to the United Nations in Geneva, capturing the historic adoption of
the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), the first global health and corporate
accountability treaty. As a leader pushing for a strong treaty throughout many
years of tough negotiations, Infact worked closely with the World Health Organization,
government negotiators, public interest organizations including members of the Network for Accountability of
Tobacco Transnationals (NATT), and activists from around the world.
Overcoming the Odds chronicles these powerful voices as they describe standing up to giant tobacco coporations and their allies in wealthy nations. They speak to the power and potential of the nations of Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Caribbean and Pacific uniting to negotiate with one voice, sharing the elation they felt when the years of work and struggle paid off and the FCTC was unanimously adopted. As momentum builds internationally toward the treaty's swift implementation, this film is a celebration of this enourmous victory and some of the people who made it happen. But the fight is far from over. For the treaty to take effect, 40 countries must ratify it. Help make the final push to rein in Big Tobacco internationally.
